#1 How to make a good impression
To leave people with good impression is not easy and sometimes what you think will impress people wasn’t work at all even though you try your best. You normally get just one shot at leaving a good impression, so to make sure people don’t leave with a bad after taste upon meeting you, keep these pointers in mind:
- Judging a book by its cover. We know it’s sad, but people do decide if they like a person within the first five minutes of meeting them – so make sure you smile, be clean and smell nice!
- Act confident. People are attracted to a self-assured person so know you own strengths but remember not to come across as being too arrogant. After all, no one likes a know-it-all!
- Let your body talk. Is your body language encouraging? Remember to smile, give a firm handshake, lean forward, maintain eye contact and work with conviction.
#2 How to be a cool colleague
With most of us chalking in 15-hour days, it’s not surprising that we’re in the company of co-workers more than friends and family. And you surely don’t want to step on the toes of people you spend so many of your waking hours with, do you? It’s so easy to be a colleague everyone will love being with. Try these tips, and pretty soon work won’t be such a dread….
- Hands off other colleagues’ property – that include mugs, staplers, scissors and toys. You can borrow them, but make sure you have their permission first and always return to them! Avoid their “special” stationery at all cost and do not pass their stuff around.
- Don’t intercom the person sitting right next to you when you want to keep something personal. Your other workmates will get suspicious and feel left out. A left obvious alternative is email. Whispering just makes you look like you’re up to something shady.
- Don’t openly apply for jobs in front of your boss or co-workers! It’s just disloyal, lowers team morale and highlights the fact that you’re not doing any work.
- If you plan to come in late to work, get permission and inform the person who’s expected to cover for you and remember to thank them later.
#3 How to survive the first day on a new job
The first day at work is unnerving to say the least, but you might as well start familiarizing yourself with your surroundings before work starts to pile on! Learn how to work the copier, fax and printer – and if you’re unsure, ask. No one expects too much of you on your first day anyway! Be sure to note down people’s names (especially department heads) to show your respect. Get connected with your new team mate and people in your department and don’t forget try to know people from other department especially those you’ll working with the most of your time.
Besides, you also should pay attention to people who going to work under your supervision. Get to know their name and if necessary try to find out their attitude roughly. This will help you a lot when it’s time to work together and by understanding their criteria, it will be easier for you to communicate and deal with them in future means less trouble you have to face. Remember not to behave like a boss in your first day or nobody will like you. Whatever you do, don’t spend your first day gossiping, flirting, or taking a long lunch break. You must don’t want to hear somebody complaint about you and worst if it change others first impressions towards you especially when it comes to your boss knowledge.
#4 How to handle office politics
No matter where you work – from big to small company, there’re always politics played inside. So, should you be the “blur sotong” or president of the rumor mill? The answer is neither! Instead, aim to be the well-informed chick. Like it or not, office politics is here to stay and whether you’re survive or trap inside it’s depends on how much you know about it. However, the best way to stay survive is to understand what happen around you. Office politics take two forms:
- The first involves attacking, blaming and withholding (info, resources and supplies)
- The second is impression management, where one draws attention to their own success and takes credit for others’ accomplishments. Protect yourself by practicing three golden rules: Don’t make enemies, don’t burn bridges and never make anyone look bad.
At office there’s no such thing as a “top secret”. Don’t assume anything you say will stay a secret and steer clear from bitching sessions. It’s smart to know what’s happening around you, but learn not to get sucked in. Listen, take notes but don’t involve with any conflicts. Stay away as far as you can and try to control what you say and carefully with any actions you take. Beware with every step you take because someone always waiting for you to make mistakes and once you take a wrong step, easier for them to trap you.
#5 How to get heard at a meeting
Not being taken seriously at meeting? Feeling stress, useless and uncertain? You talk and nobody pay attention on what you said? How to get their attention? Here’s what you need to practice:
· Always arrive on time, alert, and with a bottle of water if you suffer from a dry mouth. Bring your notebook with all your ideas listed clearly. Immediately after a meeting, make more detailed notes and write a “to do” list of your new aims and responsibilities. So, next time it will be easier for you to make arrangement and plan what you want to do in future. Make sure you’re clear with things you want to do and manage your time wisely so you can achieve your goal on time.
· Don’t criticize colleagues’ ideas unless you have an alternative or can justify your objection. On the same note, don’t sulk if an idea of yours is rejected or is being criticized. Accept when your colleagues criticized your ideas and take it as your challenge to do better in future and see it from positive side. Remember not to take things personally because you are all working to the same end.
· Be engaged in the meeting. Make brief notes, but concentrate on following the debate and checking eye contact. Speak clearly when you make a comment and don’t make people feel doubt about things you trying to say. Talk only and directly to your main point, don’t raise your voice or shout, simply make your statement in a calm and confident manner.
Finally, check your body language. Avoid folding your arms, scratching or leaning back because it indicates arrogance and a lack of interest.

Great post Lily and very applicable with all of the new college grads hitting the market. Regarding your point on office politics, there’s another element besides the two you mentioned and it’s the avoidance approach. People who play “ostrich” are as dangerous as the backstabbing politicians. Your point about impression management is spot on. It’s really all about managing perceptions.

You’re right about the office politics and it’s very dangerous for new comer especially fresh college grads which sometimes easily influence by politicians people. To be acceptable and survive at work, we have to behave smart and make a lot of friends and avoiding enemies as much as possible. Knowing what’s going on around us all the time is important to make sure we’re not full around by this irresponsible people.
