Sometimes it amazes and frustrates me how much I don'’t know. And sometimes the fact that there is so much to learn inspires and motivates me to grow. With all the studying and reading and training I have done I am still aware of many gaps in my education. These gaps show up in all areas of my life where I have not reached my full potential and I know it.

I was thinking about this missing curriculum one day and how grateful I am for the lessons I have learned outside of my “ordinary” education. I decided to make a list of some of the things I am enjoying learning and like to share with others who are learning them also.

As you read through the following list you can see that to obtain the missing curriculum you must start by admitting and unlearning what does not work. Until you understand that there is an entirely different approach to take the doors to the new life that these new lessons promise will remain closed to you. When you understand that you can reclaim the personal power to choose freedom the doors begin to open for you.

There is no doubt that we continue to evolve in spite of ourselves. Even if you don'’t consciously seek to stretch and grow there will be plenty of opportunities to do just that. Life will give you people, events and circumstances that will best support you to stretch beyond your comfort zone.

Have a look at this list of the missing curriculum and celebrate the learning you have already done. Consider what is next on your personal list. First read what most of us have learned and then read about what many of us have missed.

1. We have not learned to respect differences.
We were taught that to feel good we must believe that we are “right” and others are “wrong.”

2. We have not learned effective ways to manage conflicts.
We were taught to avoid confrontation, to act nice, to pretend everything is fine even when it is not.

3. We have not learned the communication skill of “deep listening” which gives us the ability to both hear and be heard.
We were taught to tune others out and to listen to the thoughts inside our own heads even when we appear to be listening to someone else.

4. We were not taught spirit-connection practices for remembering and retaining awareness of who we really are.
We were taught to discount what we know, to ignore our essential self, and to disconnect from our own wisdom, power and energy.

5. We were not taught to harvest our life lessons as we grow and to enjoy the process of our own unfolding.
We did not learn that life gives us ongoing opportunities to learn and grow and that we are ever-expanding and evolving by nature

6. We were not taught to release past patterns and habits that no longer work for us.
We learned to do the same things over and over again hoping to get different results.

7. We were not taught practical systems for launching our dreams and actualizing our potentials.
Some of us never learned to dream. Others learned to give up on dreams before they got launched. Still others learned to dream big but to have no confidence that their dreams would ever be realized.

8. We have not learned how to build inner stamina and to maintain our focus.
We were taught to resist rather than persist.

9. We have not learned to make decisions from the inside first.
We were taught to look outside for answers and to doubt our own abilities.

10. We were not taught the power of our thoughts and how to focus them.
We were taught that thoughts are difficult to control or manage.

11. We have not learned the value of our emotions and how to manage them.
We were taught to disown, ignore, deny and repress our feelings.

12. We have not learned the importance of self-love.
We were taught that it is selfish to love and care for our self.

13. We were not taught how to make peace with what is.
We were taught to fight with the conditions of our lives.

14. We have not learned to take responsibility for creating our lives.
We were taught to be victims, to blame others and to feel shame for what and who we are.

15. We have not learned that struggle is optional and joy is a choice.
We were taught that life is tough.

16. We have not learned the missing curriculum.
We were taught that our education is complete and we are done.

We are all doing our best to unlearn those things we were taught that don'’t serve us anymore. And it is clearly time to learn what, for most of us, was left out.

Do you realize if a new drummer has the mindset of never becoming a great drummer, he or she will never be a great drummer? Continuing to think the way you'’ve always thought will keep you right where you are. You will never rise above the way you see yourself.

If you say you can, or if you say you cannot do something, you'’re absolutely correct either way. Most everything is a state of mind. Just like being able to play double bass is a state of mind, mastering all forty rudiments is also a state of mind. You have to believe you can first do these things before you ever will.

Changing your mindset is absolutely necessary, and very simple. Here are three things you can do, right now….

1. Think in a positive light

This one is obvious, but the most difficult because it has become such a habit. You may not even realize how negative you are! The best way to become more positive is to make yourself accountable to someone you trust. Tell them you want them to let you know the next time you say something negative, or when you say you cannot do something.

2. Change your associations

Remember, I just said make yourself accountable to someone you trust? Do you have someone in your life like that? If not, you definitely need some better friends.

Here’’s the facts.. In the next five years you will be the sum total of the people you associate with. You have to decide who you have to cut off in order to move ahead with your drumming, and your life in general.

I know that sounds harsh, but you can still love them, but from a distance. Now, find some people who can inspire you. Whether you find them in books or in Internet forums, it doesn'’t matter.

Just get around some positive. You have to surround yourself with winners to create positive changes in your life.

3. Repeat affirmations to yourself

Think of a list of positive things you can say to yourself everyday. For example:

~ I choose to practice my drums everyday
~ I'’m getting better and better everyday
~ I'’m on my way to becoming a great drummer

Be careful of saying things like:

~ I'’m a master at playing double bass (when you'’re not)
~ I'’ve mastered all forty rudiments (when you haven'’t)
~ or anything else you simply cannot believe right now!

You'’ve got to tell yourself things your mind can grab a hold of in the moment!

Conclusion

You cannot change what you don'’t acknowledge, so think about your current level of drumming and take ownership for it. Once you'’ve owned up to it and have admitted to yourself that no one has held you back more than yourself, you'’ll experience a type of freedom that will propel you on to becoming the great drummer you'’re capable of becoming!

The vast majority of humans go through life without ever experiencing Reality beyond what the ordinary dualistic mind projects. Bound tightly by the ego-centric mind, they live their entire life stuck in mediocrity, mostly struggling for this or that, while experiencing a few fleeting joys. One of the things that I hope to accomplish in this life, is awaken in you a passion for the supreme, for the highest, and to that end, I think having an enlightenment experience or two can go a long way.

Enlightenment experiences are glimpses of that aspect of life and your being, which are beyond time, space and self. These enlightenment experiences come in infinite variety, and in addition to giving you deep insight into the true nature of reality, they also inspire you to live life at your highest potential.

Seeing the truth of singularity makes you question the nature of duality and thought, while experiencing the utter freedom of these states, makes you question the value of your attachments. So how can we go about facilitating these experiences?

Enlightenment experiences are not subject to your will. They occur when there is a shift of awareness beyond the ego-centric mind and life can be defined as an opportunity for setting the stage for such shifts to take place.

Some of the best tools for creating such a stage are without a doubt Meditation, Yoga and Pranayama (Yoga Breathing Exercises). But, in this article I want to share with you a very simple and key tip, which I have noticed through personal experience, helps create the situation that is conducive to enlightenment experiences occurring.

This simple method is that of napping. Yes that is correct, you read it fine, napping. I have noticed time and again, that when napping during the day, the phase between wakefulness and sleep invariably opens the doors to infinity.

It does not matter where you nap. On the bus to New York, on the sofa, in bed, does not matter. The key factor is for you to maintain your awareness as you drift off to sleep. If you can do this you are in for a treat. So try to remain alert as sleep comes and see what magic takes place. It is not even necessary for you to chase enlightenment experiences. Invariably we all end up napping at some stage due to whatever reason and when that happens, treat it like an opportunity to break through.

I want to mention here that you can have similar results with simple nighttime sleep as well. Although, the probability of a shift in awareness is less than napping, the phase when the ordinary wakeful mind is diminished and sleep is yet to come, is a very conducive time to penetrate the veil of the dualistic mind.

In addition, if you can develop a habit of meditating prior to sleep, this transitory phase and overnight sleep itself can become a very spiritual, precious and cherished time for you. One of the key aspects of developing this ability is discovering in which position you cannot sleep easily. You can then use that knowledge to give yourself a better opportunity to practice this technique on a nightly basis. It is well worth the effort.

My mother and grandmother used to say, “Everything happens for a reason”. Frankly, I always thought that was just their way of getting me to accept when things didn'’t go my way. I heard it over and over again “Everything happens for a reason”.

But for the most part I thought it was just their way of gently letting me down. After a while I guess I just accepted it.

Does Everything Really Happen for a Reason?

Years later one of my brilliant mentors gave me additional perspective on this belief: everything happens for a reason and it serves me. I decided to explore this added nuance and began saying that phrase over and over.

When things didn'’t “go my way”, I would say, “OK, everything happens for a reason and it serves me.” Well, if it serves me, then show me how!

Hello, My Name is Anger

One day I was feeling particularly out of sorts and really angry about something and all of a sudden that phrase popped into my head. I thought, “OK, Anger, if it’’s true that everything happens for a reason and it serves me, then tell me why you'’re here! I want to know because it doesn'’t feel like you'’re helping me right now”.

And what came to mind was: “I'’m here to give you strength; to help you face whatever it is that you'’re so upset about. I'’m here to bring your awareness, energy and focus to whatever is troubling you. I'’m here to put you in a position of strength and focus so that you can say what needs to be said and do what needs to be done.”

After hearing those messages and having that awareness, I began to settle down and breathe more deeply. I became more relaxed and more prepared to address the situation in a much more powerful, calm and centered fashion.

I knew why Anger came and how it was meant to serve me. It wanted me to speak up. I was able to collect my thoughts, take appropriate action and say what I needed to say. Surprisingly, without any anger, hostility or resentment.

Fascinated by this experience, I paid attention to other emotions and how they too were there to serve me. I gradually realized that I possessed an Internal Guidance System, a 7th Sense, linked to my emotions.

It was natural, automatic and well-intentioned. When I pay attention to my 7th Sense, I am well served. When I don'’t, I usually encounter trouble!

You Too Have a 7th Sense!

After years of exploration and testing, a technique for communicating with the 7th Sense unfolded. People who tapped into their 7th Sense experienced greater power, centeredness and resourcefulness.

The results of these sessions have been uplifting. In every case, every emotion, even the most painful, revealed its positive intention and service.

Once understood and accepted, the emotion could be released. And if it ever arose again the person knew why it was there and what is was guiding them to do. All they had to do was recognize its intended service and it was gone as quickly as it had come.

In some cases, patterns of all-consuming rage were wiped out. In others, feelings of fear, self-doubt or depression were gone in one session.

In some people with physical pain accompanying the emotions, the pain was also released along with the emotion. I can think of at least three clients with long-term Rheumatoid Arthritis who were pain free and remained so after one or two 7th Sense sessions.

In each case, after the release of rage, fear, self-loathing or whatever specific emotion the person was dealing with, a feeling of power and greater certainty came in its place. When limiting emotional patterns, like anxiety, stress or depression were released people found they were able to handle things that used to upset or derail them with ease and confidence.

So the next time anger, fear, self-doubt, frustration, confusion or virtually anything upsetting arises in you, ask: “Why are you here? How are you supposed to serve me?” The answers will surely surprise and liberate you.

Some people at a very early age know exactly what they want to be, do, or have. They started dreaming early. Sadly, some of these same people allow their dreams to remain dormant like unlit charcoal lying in a barbecue pit. Their dreams have the potential to come true if ignited. But, most find it much easier to drift through life dreaming about wealth and success instead of taking action to make it happen.

If you have been dreaming about owning and operating a successful business, whether online or off — if you’ve always dreamed of being your own boss — if you want to build financial success in your already existing business, and it hasn’t happened, then you must develop the mindset to make it happen.

The formula for calculating profit is really quite simple; the total earnings of the business minus the expenditures of the business (employee wages, materials, office space, etc.) equals the total profit for the year.

Obviously, there are several ways in which that profit margin can increase. One way is by increasing the amount of revenue that the business brings in. This is nice and it’’s also the goal of steps such as advertising; bring in more sales and the profits go up.

Unfortunately, generating extra business and sales will not always mean an increase in profit. Think about this; the more business that comes in, the more product needs to be created in order to be sold. The more product being manufactured, the greater the chance of defects. This chain of events is what is at the heart of the Six Sigma business plan; costs are managed by decreasing defects within the production system.
