Is Baby Crawling An Essential Skill?

By Madeleine Fitzpatrick

Most babies crawl in some manner or other before they begin to walk. While the majority of babies crawl on all fours, others do the army crawl, propel themselves around on their bottom, or even crawl backwards. And then there are those who do not crawl at all - instead, their first forays at mobility are on two legs.

There is some debate among pediatricians on the importance of baby crawling. Some say it is not a significant developmental milestone, while others believe it is a skill that helps babies later in life. According to Glenn Doman, author of “How to Teach Your Baby to Be Physically Superb”, baby crawling helps babies develop convergence of vision, which stimulates the mid-brain.

This helps when they later learn to read and write. Babies who do not crawl may also develop speech problems, he says. These problems can be overcome at any time, says Doman, by practicing crawling for a few months - even though the child already knows how to walk. While most doctors recommend that babies sleep on their backs, there is also a consensus about the desirability of placing babies on their tummies while they are awake. Providing plenty of ‘’tummy time'’ helps to develop a baby’’s motor skills.

When on her belly, a baby will lift her head and look around, push herself up with her arms, and try to propel herself forward with her legs. All these baby crawling activities help to develop a baby’’s neck, arm, leg and chest muscles.

As they get to see more of their immediate environment in the prone position, babies are motivated to reach out for objects around them. This, in turn, can promote baby crawling. Doman says that babies should be left on their tummies for at least four waking hours of every day.

Baby crawling usually begins between 6 and 10 months. And apart from placing your baby on her tummy, there are other ways that you can help her learn to crawl: put her on the floor as often as possible and remove any bulky clothes that may hamper baby crawling.

Remember that your baby will crawl best when her knees and elbows are bare. It’’s important not to force your baby to crawl, but you can encourage her by leaving objects she would like to grab onto or play with slightly out of reach.

Most babies start walking between 10 and 18 months. They usually start by pulling themselves up on the furniture to get into a standing position. Typically this is followed by a period of ‘’cruising'’ - walking around while holding onto the furniture. It is best to let babies be barefoot at this time, as this helps them to develop their balance.

While it’’s important to encourage your baby’’s mobility, there’’s no need to get hung-up about it either. If you find yourself fretting that someone else’’s child is crawling or walking sooner or better than yours, remember that every phase in your child’’s life is only temporary. No matter where your baby is on the mobility scale, chances are he'’ll be walking, running - and forcing you to run after him - before you know it.

Healthy adults around the globe can benefit from adding probiotic supplements to their diet. One major population that can gain health-related rewards from this practice are senior citizens. Many senior citizens must maintain regimens of prescription medication. This practice, along with a poor diet or simple stress, can weaken the body’’s natural immunities. A probiotic supplement can help strengthen the body naturally.

Probiotics function as friendly bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. They have been reported to assist in numerous common ailments. The helpful microorganisms reside in the tract as a barrier against other harmful bacteria and pathogens that can cause a variety of illnesses. This is a natural process overall. Scientists report that there are over 400 of these microorganisms living in a healthy gastrointestinal tract.

The friendly bacteria stimulate the body’’s production of necessary digestive enzymes. This improves the overall digestive system. They help the body to produce a variety of B vitamins as well as give the body vitamin K. They also offer a boost of antioxidants to strengthen the immune system.

Probiotic bacteria can be taken in many forms today. It is available in the grocery store in many dairy products. Yogurt and cheeses offer the highest levels because the bacteria are often used in processing milk into dairy products. They may also be found in some varieties of pickles and fruit juice.

Probiotic supplements are also available in a variety of forms at your nearest health and nutrition store. They are available in powders, tablets, capsules and in granulated form. All are taken orally and may be mixed with food.

These helpful organisms have been shown to decrease allergic reactions in patients who have lactose intolerance or hay fever. Some individuals with skin conditions such as eczema have reported some relief after developing their own regular regimen.

Our bodies are constantly changing. These changes may greatly decrease the body’’s natural defenses. Antibiotics are often necessary in our body’’s fight against infection. This also means that the antibodies will target both good and bad bacteria. You may be more susceptible to contracting illness once your round of antibiotics has stopped.

Stress is often a major factor in weakening our bodies. Senior citizens may experience greater amounts due to the changes in life and their environments. A probiotic regimen may help alleviate these issues and prevent many common illnesses with regular use.

Poor diet is another major factor in the loss of helpful bacteria. Carbonated beverages are common in our diets and may deplete the levels normal in the human body. They may also diminish your body’’s probiotic levels. Other contributing factors that will lessen your body’’s natural defenses include:

* Depression/Anxiety

* Non-organic foods

* Excessive sugars or fats in diet

* Influenza or stomach flu

* Urinary tract infections

* Yeast infections

These friendly bacteria will have a wonderful impact on those who incorporate a probiotic routine into their daily diet. Your physician will provide detailed information based upon your current state of health.

The UK this year has seen the coldest start it has had for 30 years and with cold winters comes illnesses. So this year is also the worst flu out break the country has seen for over a decade.

The outbreak first started in and around Central England and has since spread out through the whole of the country. It is said though, that more young adults are suffering. Health professionals and experts have said this is due down to the fact that young people have not received the flu vaccine, so they are able to catch flu’’s a lot easier.

Respiratory diseases are at an all time high and patients are visiting their family doctors and emergency services more than ever. Most doctors will usually close their doors throughout the Christmas period but officials are concerned that A&E departments will become over run if GP’’s are not open themselves.

But I believe there is a lot more too it then just the cold weather making us have such illnesses. Let’’s take a look at a few factors that may be causing this outbreak.

1) There is currently a lot of stress flying around; we are in terrible economic times at the moment and the financial situation does not make things any better. Stress is the worst thing to weaken your immune system.
2) Worry, again with the current financial situation comes worry. People are so scared to lose their jobs as there are companies shutting down left right and centre, they are weakening their systems.
3) Cutting down on everything. While people are trying to save money they are cutting down on a lot of things that they need to fight of illnesses such as food, drink and home heating.
4) People are getting so panicked about earning money during this crisis, that they go into work when they are ill, which further more spreads the virus.

As you can see there are many reasons as to why people may be feeling ill this year. And I believe most of it is due down to stress and more from the constant talk about the credit crunch. People, especially people with families start to get worried about providing for each other, so the constant worries and strains cause the immune system to break down. So what our bodies had the ability to fight last year, is just not as strong this year. 2008 has been a hard year globally and 2009 may well be worse so remember to prioritise your health.

Is This The Right Time to Lose Weight?

By Iain Stubley

People around the U.S.A. start diets each and every week. Sadly, many of them do not succeed. These dieters are well intentioned, but they simply are not ready to lose weight. Losing weight is something that takes effort, preparation and a bit of patience. It is more like a marathon and less like a sprint.

Asking yourself if this is the right time to lose weight is quite useful. If you are honest with yourself you can discover if this is actually the right time for you to start a diet, or if you should start a diet a month or so from now. Being in the right time is critical to your success. Starting your diet at the very same time you decide to go back to school could be quite challenging for many people. Or starting a diet during the holiday season. But starting a diet at another time in your life could be quite ideal and you'’d have a better chance for success.
Ask yourself the following questions to see if you are ready to lose weight at this time:

Are you prepared to change your lifestyle? Some diets talk about how you can eat cheeseburgers or cheesecake and still lose weight, but true weight loss involves changing your lifestyle. Rest assured that even if you are eating cheeseburgers or cheesecake, you are eating them in much smaller portions than you are originally used to and not having them as often as you'’d like to. Every dieter needs to be prepared to change their lifestyle.

Do you know why you want to lose weight? Usually for a dieter there is some turning point that sends them to the diet in the first place. They have a bad family photo taken or an outfit they like doesn'’t fit. Or doing an activity is uncomfortable at their weight. The more you know about why you want to lose weight will lead you to successful results. But it is important to lose weight for yourself you can only do it for yourself. Losing weight because your sister said you look like a beached whale is only going to lead to half-baked results. The reasons you'’ll successfully lose weight need to be reasons that are personal and are important to you.

Can you make weight loss fit into your life? It seems like everyone’’s life gets busier by the day. We are all pressed for time. It is critical to ask yourself if you can make weight loss fit into your life. Weight loss involves behavior modification and changing many of your habits. By changing your daily habits, you'’ll be successful in the long run. Look to how you can make weight loss fit into your life and you'’ll see great success.

Can you add daily exercise to your life? The best kept secret to long-term weight loss is daily exercise. Daily exercise burns fat and builds muscle. It is great for your body, mind and spirit. Fitting in exercise into your life is very important. As your life is now, can you add at least half an hour of exercise each day for at least five days a week? This is what an adults needs for good health and weight loss.

Do you feel like now is the right time? This is probably the most important question to ask yourself. If you feel that now is the right time to lose weight, then any obstacle that you face can literally melt away right in front of you. Even if it is the holiday season, or you work two jobs. If you feel you are meant to lose weight now, you'’ll make it work now. But if you feel hesitant or unsure about your success, then chances are you will have trouble with being successful. You won'’t put in enough effort daily to make it work. Ask yourself how hard you are willing to work to see weight loss results.

Getting To Know Beautiful Russian Women

By Joseph Carducci

Russian women, of course, are very emotional and can be thin-skinned. But do not be reluctant to ask questions of her. Queries such as: What kind of man would you like to picture next to you? How do you suppose your everyday life after the marriage? What is more central for you: the family or having a vocation?

Ask her how she passed last week, and assure her what you have been doing during this time. Drop A Line about anything that you have determined intriguing. Ask their advice about a certain matter or a delicate state of affairs in your life. Share your projects for the future with her.

How long should the correspondence phase last? And after this, what is the next step? At this point you need to sustain a sense of balance. On the one hand, a prolonged period of correspondence presents you the chance to know each other better. On the other hand, Russian women do not like men who cannot produce a decision.

They want a firm and decisive man. Therefore, prolonged correspondence will be a great irritation to the average Russian woman. In General, you will have about 6 months to decide that you want to come and meet her. This is a critical point. Then you have to determine where your first meeting will be held - in her country, in your country or any other country.

If you live in one of the Western nations, it will be exceedingly problematic to arrange for her to come to you. Your best choices are to either visit her in Russia or the Former Soviet Union, or to arrange a meeting in a third country.

In my opinion it is far easier for you to come to her country. This way you will understand how she lives, meet her family, and see how she acts and comports herself in normal, average life.

Due to the cruel reality of Russian life (war and a totalitarian regime), the amount of women in this country has always been far more than men. Since then, the demographic situation has not changed. This is one of the reasons why even the most beautiful Russian women will oftentimes fall in love with even an unremarkable looking man.

Russian women often believe their hearts, not well-grounded thought. One can be high, beautiful and wealthy and still neglect to attract the attention of a Russian woman, or you may receive her attention without actually doing anything at all! My point is that if there is somebody who attracts you (maybe you have seen her online), do not be reluctant to contact her.

Typically, a Russian woman does not expect to profit financially from relationships. Her love is sincerely altruistic, and she oftentimes sacrifices her career and her interests for the needs and interests of her family.

Devotion controls to a large extent the conduct of Russian bride in love. For most Russian women, in the words of the church wedding rite “I vow to stay with my husband in heartache and joy, until death parts us”, there is actual meaning.

A Russian wife has her values organized as follows: children - husband - relatives - her home - her work. As you can see, the husband represents a paramount purpose in her life. Invariably he is a regular sexual partner.

For a Russian women now, specially during the ages of 25-30, may run into some problems encountering a man to establish permanent sex with. So, the husband everything to her. This is also substantiated by the fact that after the wedding, a young wife typically will tighten her circle of friends significantly. She does not require them any longer, for her husband becomes her best champion.

Her husband traditionally is the head of the household for the Russian woman. She will not go out, and not to do major shopping, not make any significant decisions without referring him.

For Russian women, children are the final value. If you already have your own children (from your preceding marriages) Russian girls, of course, will love them, too. If she loves you, then she will love all of your children as if it they were her own country, because the man and his dear progeny are indivisible.

A Guide On Acupuncture Treatment

By Cindy Heller

The record of acupuncture begins in China. It has been performed for thousands of years in Asian countries. This practice involves using needles at specifics points on the body to alleviate specific symptoms. But besides this, there is also a more spiritual side to the process. The idea of yin and yang, or two opposing and complementary forces that work simultaneously is a big part of the medicine as well.

Acupuncture treatment in the United State wasn'’t really recognized until 1971 when a New York Times reporter named James Reston wrote about the experience he had with acupuncture when he was in China. The technique was used in order to ease pain after a surgery. The process is well synchronized in the United States by the FDA and has requirements for the process. The needles being used must be sterile, nontoxic, and labeled for single use only. The practitioner must be qualified too. These are basic things to think about when you are looking to visit a practitioner at an treatment center.

The foundation of acupuncture and herbal medicine is the idea that there is an energy flow that runs throw our body. This idea is alike to the conception of charkas in the body that is utilized in Indian medicine and yoga. It is said that if the energy in the body is insufficient, unbalanced, or agitated then the body will becomes ill.

Our symptoms are a sign indicating that something has interrupted the natural flow of energy in the body. To rectify this, acupuncture and Chinese medicine is used. The treatment involves the insertion of needles into certain points of the body. Some people believe this will help to release endorphins in the body and it can help to alleviate stress in some cases and calm the body.

There are certain pathways within the body that can help to channel the energy in the body. These pathways can become blocked at some point of time, unbalanced, or deficient in some way. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be used to bring back the pathways to their proper balance. Occasionally herbs are burned and the properties of the herbs can help with the therapy to restore the balance of the body.

Acupuncture Needles

Needles may appear scary to some people but they are a necessary part of the treatment and Chinese medicine. The needles used will be different in length, width, and shape. Depending on where the needle will be used and inserted and the purpose of the treatment the needle will also vary. At times electrical impulses in very small amounts are sent through the needles. This type of acupuncture is usually used when treating pain or trying to stop pain.

When it comes to dentures, people have many questions when their oral professional says it’’s time for them to consider this option. They may have mixed feelings regarding the advantages and disadvantages a full set of dentures will bring. One question that may come up is what if they need to repair dentures? Here are some common questions, including the procedure of using a denture repair service.

Will My Dentures Feel Natural?

Just like most things that are new or different, your dentures may feel unusual at first, but you'’ll get used to them. At first, you may find it necessary to speak a little slower and you may find yourself having to practice certain syllables before you feel comfortable. Initially, many patients report the dentures slip out of place when eating. This is natural and you'’ll soon learn how to control them and stop this from happening. It helps to chew on both sides of your mouth instead of consistently using only one side. When you find them starting to slip, bite down on the plate and swallow.

My Dentures Are Broken, What Should I Do?

Just because your dentures are broken doesn'’t mean you'’re at a total loss. A denture repair service can repair many common breaks, making them like new. If they should break, put all of the pieces into a glass of water immediately to prevent a change of shape and then contact the denture repair service. When you contact the service, be sure to ask how long it will take them to repair dentures and what the total cost will be.

What About A Partial Plate?

Sometimes you may still have a few natural teeth or implants that are in good condition. If this is the case, your dentist may suggest a partial plate or overdenture. In this situation, your dentures work together with your remaining teeth and sit over them allowing you to keep the good teeth you currently have. Although these existing teeth will need special preparation prior to the forming of your dentures, it’’s usually less expensive than a full set of dentures.

Immediate Dentures

With immediate dentures, the procedure is exactly what the name implies. A laboratory has worked ahead of time to prepare a set of dentures for you prior to having your teeth removed. Once your teeth have been totally removed, the dentures are fitted and placed in your mouth. Although you will have an immediate smile, there is still the requirement for adjustments and realignment to give you a perfect fit.

Can I Do Repair Dentures Myself?

This may sound like a good idea, especially if your dentures have lost just one tooth or have a minor crack, but you should always seek a professional denture repair service when you need to repair dentures. Super glue is a wonderful product for many things but it’’s not suggested to repair dentures. The chemicals in the glue may ruin the denture material and ultimately you will need an entire new set of dentures made.

The wearing of dentures may seem strange at first to many people and they may worry about having to repair dentures, but it’’s much easier now than ever before. New technology and talented experts have addressed the most common concerns. If you require the services of a denture repair service, they can repair and return your dentures in a matter of days.

Success is more than economic gains, titles, and degrees, if you want to achieve the success, have a proper plan is essential.

Planning for success is about mapping out all the aspects of your life. It is similar to a map, you need to define details in terms of origin, destination, vehicle, backpack, landmarks, and route.

Origin: Who you are

A map has a starting point. Your origin is who you are right now, when you ask people to introduce themselves, in the most case, people would say, “Hi, I'’m Jean and I am a 17-year old, senior high school student.” Yes, you got answer, but it does not tell you about who Jean is; it only tells you her present preoccupation.

To gain insights about yourself, you need to look closely at your beliefs, values, and principles aside from your economic, professional, cultural, and civil status. Your experiences can also give you insights on your good and not-so-good traits, skills, knowledge, strengths, and weaknesses.

Destination: A Vision of Who You Want to be

“Who do you want to be?” this is your vision. It is important that you know yourself so that you would have a clearer idea of who you want to be; and the things you want to change whether they are attitudes, habits, or points of view.

If you lack of self-awareness and hardly know about yourself, your vision and targets for the future will not be that clear. What I mean is basically your destination should cover all the aspects of your being: the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual.

Vehicle: Your Mission

A vehicle is the means by which you can reach your destination. It can be analogized to your mission or vocation in life. To a great extent, your mission would depend on what you know about yourself.

Travel Bag: Your knowledge, Skills, and Attitude

Food, drinks, medicines, and other traveling necessities are contained in a bag. You can apply this concept into your life map as well. What I mean is that you can bring certain knowledge, skills, and attitudes with you. These determine your competence and help you in attaining your vision. Given such, there is a need for you to assess what knowledge, skills, and attitudes you have at present and what you need to gain along the way.

This two-fold assessment will give you insights on your landmarks or measures of success.

Landmarks and Route: S.M.A.R.T. Objectives

Landmarks confirm that if you are on the right track while the route determines the travel time. Thus, in planning out your life, you also need to have landmarks and a route.

These landmarks are your measures of success. These measures must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound. But remember that you cannot set two major landmarks such as earning a master’’s degree and a doctorate degree within a period of three years since the minimum number of years to complete a master’’s degree is two years.

Anticipate Turns, Detours, and Potholes

The purpose of your life map is to minimize hasty and spur-of-the-moment decisions that could make you lose your way. But oftentimes our plans are modified along the way due to some inconveniences, delays, and other situations beyond our control.

It just like in any path, there are turns, detours, and potholes, thus we must anticipate them and adjust it accordingly.

Speak Up and Be Assertive

By Pinky McKay

Can you come and see me, pleeeease? Alison was sobbing down the phone. When I had seen her as an antenatal client she was a strong, capable professional woman, pro-active about being prepared for becoming a mum. Now, she was vulnerable, teary and awash with post birth hormones. Being in hospital with helpful people prodding her body was an experience we had discussed, but until you actually have somebody grabbing your breast and shoving your baby’’s head into it, it can be difficult to realise how hard it can be to speak up and how easily this realisation can further undermine your confidence. We are all conditioned that professionals are the experts so even though it is your baby and your body, when you are a beginner being assertive, especially when people are trying to help you, becomes a whole new ball-game.

From the time you discover you are pregnant, you can find yourself the target of helpful advice and you may at times have to assert yourself with family, friends and health professionals to get support for your choices around birth and parenting. But it is the intrusion on your bodily space that can be hardest to handle with dignity.

Friends and family can be comparatively easy to distract politely or with a bit of humour and if they are more intrusive, practising your assertiveness skills on them during pregnancy can give you a head
start for when you need to express your needs politely but firmly with strangers, including professionals.

Being assertive doesn'’t mean being aggressive or telling people where to shove it (not on my breast, please!). It is about asking for what you want and explaining how you feel without hostility: try saying, I would like, it would help if, or I would prefer.

After a visit with Alison and some reassurance, she was able to tell the nurses, I would rather try attaching my baby by myself. Can you please just watch and see if he is attached properly.

When you are dealing with professionals, although they deserve respect, you don'’t have to accept everything they say as final and you have every right to ask questions. Your birth plan can be a handy tool for discussion. It can also help to write down any questions that occur to you between check-ups, so that you remember to raise them at your next appointment. Enter all discussions at the same level as your health carer: for instance, if you need to ask questions, wait until you are at least sitting up and you are at eye level with your doctor. After all, it isn'’t easy to ask questions when you are lying naked from the waste down with your legs spread and somebody you have just met is peering into your vagina! And, if you are feeling intimidated by a health professional, imagine them naked or in their underwear (or wearing a white sequinned Elvis suit if the thought of them in the buff brings on an attack of nausea).
